Required Courses

Health Education = ½ credit

Students address issues including mental health, alcohol and drug use, personal and consumer health, nutrition and fitness, safety and injury prevention, family life, and disease prevention and control. Students are required to pass this class for graduation

Fitness For Life = ½ credit

This course is designed to develop an appreciation for the value of physical fitness. The students will develop an acceptable level of fitness through participation in a variety of fitness activities. The students will also gain knowledge of the benefits of exercise, health risk factors, components of fitness, the principles of training in order to develop their own personal fitness program. Students are required to pass this class for graduation.

Electives

Weight Training I - IV = ½ credit, Prerequisite – Fitness For Life

Weight Training is a course designed to develop an appreciation for the lifelong value of strength improvement. The students will develop an acceptable level of strength through a variety of weight lifting activities. As a result of participating in the weight training experience the student will develop a positive self-concept, appropriate social and emotional behaviors and an appreciation for individual differences.

Dance I - IV = ½ credit, Prerequisite – Fitness for Life

Dance is a course designed to teach the students the many techniques of the dance world. Students will also be able to demonstrate history, choreography, nutrition, and dance injury prevention.

Dance for Athletes = ½ credit, Prerequisite – Fitness for Life

Dance for Athletes is course designed to teach students the many techniques of the dance world, as well as improve their coordination and flexibility. Students will also be able to demonstrate choreography, and knowledge of dance history, nutrition, and injury prevention.

Sports Medicine = ½ credit

Sports Medicine is a course designed to give students a background in care and prevention of athletic injuries. The course will cover career opportunities, sports nutrition, psychology of sport, anatomy, principles of sport safety, training and injury prevention, common sports injuries and treatments.

Human Sexuality = ½ credit, Prerequisite – Health Education, 10-12 grade

This course is intended to provide students with accurate information and the skills necessary to establish healthy relationships and to make healthy decisions and develop responsible sexual behavior. This course will also include information on taking care of their reproductive health and pregnancy prevention and planning.

Aerobics and Personal Fitness

is a course designed to teach students various ways to develop and maintain their fitness levels.  Students will improve their conditioning in class by participating in aerobics, kick boxing, step aerobics, walking, Pilates, yoga, and weight training.  Students will be expected to design and implement a fitness program outside of class.

Lifetime Sports

is a course that focuses on participation of activites that can be played individually rather than on a team.  Students will learn skills, knowledge, and strategy that is necessary to participate in the sport and an advanced level.

Team Sports

is designed to provide students the opportunity to further pursue their interst in a variety of sports.  They will be introduced to various skills, knowledge, and strategy that is necessary to participate in the sport at an advanced level of physical fitness.

Fitness for Life II

is a course designed to apply the knowledge learned in fitness for life I with the intent to improve students' level of physical fitness.  Activities will focus on walking and weight training.

Make-up Activity List: the following are make-up activities for legal absences from class. Each assignment is worth one missed physical education class. The student may do an activity in preparation for a possible legal absences.

Write a report on a professional athlete.

  1. Write a report on any current health and fitness topic.
  2. Write a report on a professional sports team.
  3. Design an informational physical fitness poster.
  4. Summarize three athletic current events.
  5. Design a poster with the rules of a specific sport.
  6. Write a report on the history of a specific sport.
  7. Attend a Meade sports event and write a report on what happened in the game.
  8. Write an imaginary article for the school newspaper on a Meade sports team.
  9. Watch a sports event on television and write a detailed report on the game.
  10. Interview a Meade coach and write a one page report on it.
  11. Interview a Meade team captain and write a one page report on it.
  12. Interview a Meade athletic director and write a one page report on it.
  13. Run a half-mile under the supervision of your teacher.
