Text Box: Mighty Mustang News . . .

Vision- Meade High School will be recognized as a premiere culturally diverse high school.

Mission- Meade High School will provide instruction that is rigorous, relevant, and engaging in an environment that is nurturing, respectful, and culturally sensitive.

Our vision is something that we aim to be. Our mission is what we should strive to do on a daily basis. Based on our testing results, we continue to take steps of living our mission daily while striving to accomplish our vision.

In 2001, the federal No Child Left Behind Act was designed to close the achievement gap by improving the performance of U.S. primary and secondary schools by increasing the accountability for schools. Students are required to be assessed in math (Algebra) and reading (English 10) with the results categorized as Basic, Proficient , or Advanced for student achievement. Scores are reported for individual students and the state.

Adequate yearly progress (AYP) is the gain that schools must make each year in the proportion of students achieving proficiency or higher in reading and math. To make AYP, schools must meet an annual goal in reading, math, and graduation rate.

As I announced last week, Meade HS has made our AYP goals for a 5th straight year. As with the previous four years, we should celebrate. But this is truly a special year. The percent of students who passed the Algebra exam (82.5%) and English 10 exam (85.9) are the highest ever. It goes without saying that I am happy about this. This speaks to the tremendous teamwork and dedication shown in our math and English departments. But wait, there’s more! As you can see from the chart below, we tremendously increased the percentage of our students who
graduated from high school. In 2008, out of 12 comprehensive high schools in AACPS, our graduation rate was ranked 11th at 86%. In 2009, out of 12 high schools, our graduation rate was 4th highest at 93.9%. This is HUGE! It speaks of the Mustang Way that our school community (teachers, students, parents, etc.) realize that failure to make it out of high school can have dire consequences and is truly not an option.

I would like to thank all patners for our tremendous accomplishment. Please know that I appreciate your hard work and you are making a difference. Let us continue our hard work that we have begun and make our vision a reality.
